About Publishing Syndicate

Publishing Syndicate is an independent book publisher based in Northern California. The company has been in business for more than a decade, originally providing writing, photography, ghostwriting and editing services for major publishers. In 2011, Publishing Syndicate expanded the company into a full-service publishing house, although our focus remains on travel, recreation, the environment and nature related publications.

Publishing Syndicate’s mission is to help writers and authors realize personal success in the publishing industry, and, at the same time, provide an entertaining reading experience for our customers. From hands-on book consultation and the very popular and widely read Wow Principles writing and publishing tips e-newsletter, to forging book deals with both previously published and unpublished authors, Publishing Syndicate has created a powerful and enriching environment for those who want to share their writings with the world.

Publishing Syndicate is owned by married couple Dahlynn and Ken McKowen. Dahlynn is the CEO and publisher. Ken serves as president and managing editor.

Together, the two have 60-plus years of professional writing, editing, publication, marketing and public relations experience. Full-time authors and travel writers, the two had such a large body of freelance work that when they reached more than 2,000 articles, stories and photographs published, they stopped counting. And the McKowens are well respected ghostwriters, having worked with CEOs and founders of some of the nation’s biggest companies. They have also ghostwritten for a former U.S. president and a few California governors and elected officials.

From 1999 to 2009, Ken and Dahlynn were consultants and coauthors for Chicken Soup for the Soul, where they collaborated with series founders Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, co-authoring/editing several titles including Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur’s Soul; Chicken Soup for the Soul in Menopause; Chicken Soup for the Fisherman’s Soul; and Chicken Soup for the Soul: Celebrating Brothers and Sisters. They also edited and ghost-created many more Chicken titles during their tenure, with Dahlynn reading more than 100,000 story submissions.

For highly acclaimed outdoor publisher Wilderness Press, the McKowens' books include national award-winner Best of California’s Missions, Mansions and Museums; Best of Oregon and Washington’s Mansions, Museums and More; and The Wine-Oh! Guide to California’s Sierra Foothills.

Under Publishing Syndicate, the couple authored Wine Wherever: In California's Mid-Coast & Inland Region and Best of the California Coast, which won IPBA's Gold Award for best travel book in 2015.

They are now focusing most of the publishing efforts on travel, outdoor recreation, nature and the environment, be it their own work or potential new books by new or experienced authors.
